A neighbour has a SYM Attila 125. He's not really into the club or forum scene unfortunately, but it was the reliability of his Attila which helped persuade me to buy a SYM. He had a starting problem which turned out to be the solenoid. The local garage said he could not get a part for it and charged over £300 for the work of 'rewinding' it or something like that. The scooters an X Reg, and he has been told he will struggle to get spares now! I'm not too sure if the garage is ripping him off, so I wonder if anyone has heard of parts shortages for some models? If so, is it time to buy and canabalise old SYM's?

Would imagine an X reg bike would have been when perhaps SYM were not a big importer/seller in the uk as they are now so spares shipped into the Country for a model of that age would have been at a minimal. Probably time to upgrade to a more up to date model if spare parts are going to be a problem or perhaps start looking abroad for parts.
Having a Vespa PK model that is 24 years old that i am (part time) getting back together i can understand the lack of Spares in this Country. The PK small frame was not as popular as the everlasting PX range. Have Finally found a new fuel tank for it and that was from Italy at a cost of over a £100 when a PX one is about £45. Was told by probably the biggest Vespa spares supplier in the UK that they can help with things like cables etc, the small things but any major part would have to be purchased from over seas now a days. All part of the fun for me but if it was a daily mode of transport i would not consider paying out another penny and would think time to move on.

Have read a few bits here and there about parts availability problems for scooters from the far east (including Sym). How true this is I don't really know or if this is just the "anything Chinese (or Taiwanese) is crap" brigade talking rubbish. Looking at scooters like Sym or Kymco they are very much like the "Chinese" type scooter but much better built (in fact mine was built in Syms Chinese factory) and using much better quality parts. I would think that if problems did arise getting genuine parts a suitable good quality substitute would be available from the likes of Scooter Works, I'm sure that Sym don't make every individual part for their scooters after all! X reg is a bit old for a scooter! Now I'm sure I'll be moaned at as x reg isn't old it's "classic"! Says something about Sym though if a scooter that old is still going and just needed a solenoid to keep it going! My mates x reg Ford Fiesta gave up the ghost a couple of years ago and he certainly got his moneys worth out of it!

Remember the PK series very well from my Mod days back in the 80's. The PK50 was quite popular in our club, the PK125 less popular but road holding was excellent. An ex of mine had the Vespa 100 Sport which she had no end of problems with.

I have owned a Aprilia Habana 125 and was told the same story by the garage. He has also said the same thing about my MZ - a sharp intake of breath and 'Ooh dont know if I can get parts for this' - when I know there are bloody thousands of parts out there for it. I think you are right Jenksy, places like Scooter Works would be able to source something for most makes of SYM, and I doubt it would cost anything like £300
