Had a busy afternoon doing some work on the scoot. The exhaust was showing signs of winter wear, especially with the muffler removed... Didn't remove it completely (on the basis of "if it ain't broke don't fix it"), so covered up anything nearby that I didn't want painted. Used some Hycote very high temperature spray paint, tidied up the muffler a bit and hey presto... Also drained and replaced the very dirty looking gear oil... and the same with the engine oil. pleased to note, no bits of metal or other debris in the filter... Now as long as it doesn't explode next time I'm on it that should be some jobs well done !!

What a busy boy you've been! Hope you managed to cover everything up there mate before letting fly with the spray paint. Must say it looks a lot better now you've done it. Did it take much rubbing down? Surprising how dirty the old gearbox oil gets. How often do you change yours? I work on 3000km / once a year, hope that's enough. Engine oil I do every 1000km. Quite satisfying doing jobs on the old scooter, especially when its a bit warmer. Let us know how well the paint stays on right at the end of the exhaust. I find it goes powdery there after a while! Rest if it stays on fine. I used the Halfords paint applied with a brush.

Thanks Jenksy, I also enjoy tinkering about with the bike, your learning stuff all the time and saving money !
I went with the spray paint as I prefer the finish and it can be easier to apply if you're not removing the whole exhaust (and I'm lazy).
This is the first time I've changed the oils. The previous owner changed the engine oil when he sold it to me in October. I don't travel a lot of miles, but I'll stick to every 500 miles or so from now. I doubt I'll do gear oil more than once a year.

I've been wanting to remove my Combiz's heat shield and attempt to touch up the exhaust for quite a while. I heard of people removing the exhaust to do this, but like you I'd rather leave it in place. I had the same idea with using newspaper actually! Did you rub the exhaust down first, and if so what sandpaper do you recommend? I just changed the engine oil myself for the second time.

Hi TPP, I used a stiff wire brush to remove the worst of the surface rust flakes and then went back over it with a fine sandpaper. Finally a wipe over with a damp cloth, dry it and paint away. Good luck, it's worth the effort.

I wish I had a garage to work in. Weather has been quite bad lately and it will probably be a while before I get the opportunity to sort the exhaust out.

Well three weeks of winter riding and the exhaust is looking ropey again. Thinking of getting some Fertan rust treatment and then applying a couple of coats of brush on high temp paint, might give a stronger coating than the spray version. Before all that though I'm off to tge Scottish Motorcycle Show in Edinburgh tomorrow, should be interesting.

Hi mate enjoy your day at the motorcycle show, take a few pennies with you in case you see something nice and shiny to buy!!!! Good idea about the rustproofing. Let us know how it goes. I think a lot of the problem is the grit/salt that is put on the road, gets kicked up by the back wheel. I find that it wipes of but it does take the paint with it! I use Halfords extra high temperature paint which is brushed on but goes powdery very quickly right at the end of the exhaust. I think that it is because it gets SO hot in this area due to that emission control bit that gets fed into the system. Anyway have fun and take care, no asking those big boys on their big boy proper motor cycles if they would like a race against the trusty Orbit!

Its amazing how our climate takes its toll on our exhausts. I ain't even had my Combiz for 2 years yet. The exhaust is not quite at the point of flaking yet, but it is dotted all over with corrosion. I wish there was a special treatment or something to prevent it. Mind you the high temperature the pipe achieves probably doesn't help!

Fertan gets some very good reviews so I've ordered up a bottle and a tin of Hi-temp paint to try again with the exhaust. The Fertan should be useful for other rust spots too. The Scottish Motorcycle Show was really excellent, much bigger than I expected, lots of stalls of accessories, tools, clothing etc. Managed to keep my wallet in my pocket but it was a struggle ! A Sym dealer had a stand which included a couple of scoots, also got to sit on a Yamaha 3 wheeler, a type of scooter I see as very much my future (at least the ones you can ride on a car licence)...

Glad you had fun today mate. You sound like me in as much as you can resist the temptation to buy loads of stuff. Its good if you can get things you NEED and its great to see what's out there. 3 wheels! Not for me I'm afraid! One of the good things about scooters is the fact that when in heavy traffic it is often possible to get by safely. Had a little spin this afternoon, just because I wanted to! Didn't go far but it was not a bad day for it. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

While I haven't seen the specs of that Yamaha trike yet, I just had a look at some websites about the Piaggio MP3 (similar Italian trike) and the width of it, which I presume is measured from end of handlebar to end of handlebar, is 77.5cm. In comparison a Vespa GTS 125 width is 75.5cm, a Honda Dylan 125 is 70cm wide, a SYM Symba 100 is 69cm wide, and finally, my Combiz 125 is 68cm wide. So I don't think the small bit of extra width would cause any trouble when filtering through traffic. However its bulk and weight might. Light scooters with smaller wheels are much better at squeezing through traffic I've found. In Oxford there's always queues of non-moving traffic and I go through them frequently. About 3 times I've had issues with my mirror (always the left one) hitting the huge wing mirrors found on vans. Never caused any damage though thankfully! The main problem I can see with that Yamaha Tricity is although it does have a flat floorboard, it isn't very big and it doesn't have a huge cargo rack at the back, so I can't carry my goods on it! I don't even have a car licence!

The Yamaha wouldn't be any use to me as it doesn't have a foot brake therefore cannot be ridden on a car licence, but it was interesting to see one and have sit on it. The big benefit of a 3 wheeler to me is that I can get a scoot with decent power, without having to do another rip-off CBT followed by the extortionate cost of lessons and tests etc. Luckily I have a car licence, passed it (eventually) years ago. Hardly ever driven a car since as I hated the whole experience !! Anyway better get moving, the sun is out right now and there is a wee Sym parked outside that badly needs a good wash and brush up. Have a great day everyone.
