Took the Sym down to the motorcycle garage for 10am this morning. Friendly guy owns it, didn't look down his nose at me for not riding some kind of Kawasaki Mega Beast, so big points for that to start with.
Explained what I'd done to it, oil change, brake pad change etc but the main issue was the increase in engine noise which I thought might be linked to a dodgy exhaust gasket.
Left it with him and off to work I went. At 2.30pm got a text to say it's ready to collect !!!!
Off to pick it up shortly, hear what he's done and pay the bill (the scary bit !!).
Will update when I get back home....

Back home and happy !! Turned out the problem was a rusty hole at the back of the emissions pipe that leads off the exhaust. As this pipe is just a bit of touchy feely green mechanics and not really doing anything beneficial the mechanic cut the pipe and welded it closed. He also checked over the carb and made one or two adjustments to improve performance. I'd forgotten how quiet the engine was !! Total bill was £40 (delighted with that !) As a result I am happy recommend Mark 1 Motorcycles of Edinburgh, I'll defiantly use him again. www.mark1motorcycles.co.uk/Below is a photo showing the pipe section that has been welded closed. All set for summer now !

I assume that's the little bit that goes from the non-return valve on top of the exhaust? Did he weld both sides or just the main pipe? You don't mind paying for good service and £40 is very good. Doing the basics on your scooter is fine but sometimes you need to get it looked at properly. Now you know you have someone who you can rely on he will get repeat business. Hope you have fun Syming around mate!

I haven't had a proper look under as there was a car parked close to the pillar I secure the bike too, will try to take a better picture tomorrow. Whatever he did Jenksy it sounds a whole lot better than this morning.

Methinks "I'll defiantly use him again." is possibly not what you meant to say. I think you meant "I'll definitely use him again"
Happy to hear the Orbit is quiet again

Took the Sym out for it's first proper spin since the service, and boy it is purring along. Very pleased with the work done. Only thing I did was adjust the idle up slightly as the mechanic had set it low. It's a personal preference thing, I just like to hear the engine running when I'm in amongst city traffic.

Finally remembered to photo the exhaust area and it is welded at both ends.

Oh yes I see! Talking to the chaps at Southampton Motorcycles and Scooters,(Lexmoto, pulse dealer), they were saying that they often remove all the emission control bits for customers. Don't know how easy it is or how much they would charge to do it! There isn't any emission check in the scooter MOT apparently. The crankcase blow-by bit and the drain pipe for it is connected in the emission control stuff as well on the Symply so you would need to retain that bit! Had a couple of Symply trips to Hedge End Station this week (not this morning though very wet indeed!). I parked next to a Lexmoto Valencia yesterday, it was a 13 plate so 6 months older than mine and it had a fair amount of rust on it! Quite a nice retro type style but it didn't look so well finished. Might be that it hasn't been afforded enough TLC if you know what I mean. Any scooter needs looking after no matter who makes it. Looking at the prices,(yes I know, I'm a sad git) you pay £100 more for a Symply (£400 for the Symply2)and I think its probably worth the extra. Took a trip up to the cricket as well yesterday evening, very pleasant indeed. Might go for a little spin tomorrow if I get the chance, Mrs and Baby Jenksy are having a train ride up to the Big City so I'll have the whole day to myself. Hope everyone has a good weekend out there take care and if your getting the barbecue out make sure your burgers and sausages are properly cooked. And no pouring on petrol to get it started!!!!
