Anyone seen this video of a Laverda Phoenix? To me this looks exactly the same as the Sym Joyride, apart from the badge. I'm not sure if the company had some arrangement in Italy with Laverda on a 'badge engineering deal', but the scooter definitely looks like a clone. As for the quality difference the guy talks about, well Italian bikes do suffer from their fair share of electrical problems - even Laverdas if read the motorcycling press. youtu.be/f3BRizdcbuw

Still each to their own, live and let live and all that stuff. Oh yeah and if they are such rubbish, why would you make a scooter that looks like a Sym! Better go now I think! Cheers mate.

When it comes to the Italian machines style and good to look at is everything.When it comes to Italian engineering.Style is still everything because the best way to avoid a breakdown if you own one is just have it to look at. :-) ha ha.

Ha Ha I like that one mate! Just had some bad news from Mrs Jenksy. She wants me to go shopping on the way home from work tomorrow so it's in the car for me. Still the cat will be pleased, he likes to sit on the sym and enjoy the sun! I have a black cover and absorbs the heat very well. If I turf him off to take the cover off, he just jumps on the seat whilst I'm unlocking the chain! Unfortunately I'm not insured for passengers. Hope everyone has a good day on Friday and a very scootery weekend. I'll probably pop over the old folks place on Sunday. Picnic with Mrs jenksy on Saturday if its warm enough. Take care now!

I must admit I have owned a number of Vespas and Lambrettas, plus 3 Garellis, and only the Lammies have had reliability problems. I think the main problem with Dukes, Guzzis etc is the electrics. And who wants to pay all that money for an unreliable bike??? One of my neighbours has a Sym Attila 125 and has had it for a few years with no problems. Definitely persuaded me to get syming.

Hands up as well did buy a Vespa px125 disc in 97 brand new to get back into the scooter scene and yes 5 years and a good 60,000 miles later after riding her to all the national rallies and local ones as well as ride outs and as a too and from work vehicle she never failed or broke down. Rain, wind , hail and snow....it was the rust that killed her. Still got a soft spot for Vespas, but dont tell SYM'Y SYMPLY.

Just saw the video and what he said in it and the description seems to be entirely his own opinion and nothing else. SYM's are rebadged in parts of the world, in the USA they're known as 'Lance' but despite the name its still just a rebadged SYM.
As for the quality thing, I've read on other scooter forums that the Chinese built SYM's are allegedly not the same quality as their Taiwanese counterparts. I don't know if that's true or not.
I nearly got a Vespa GTS but all the problems I've seen mentioned on forums by their owners eventually put me off and I wasn't prepared to pay double the price for a scooter that is less reliable and less suited to my needs, so I got my SYM instead and had no reliability issues with it in over 6000 miles.

I know what you mean TPP. A friend bought a new Vespa GTS and had loads of problems with it and went back to his old 2stroke PX model. Must admit, the Joyride is a lot more comfortable than the Italian scoots I have owned and Sym does have good reputation for reliability.

Just reading the comments on that video and it tells the whole story. For example: "It is the same scooter built in the same factory it is still a sym but re badged " and "Laverda Phoenix = Modenas Elegan = SYM Joyride. Flip up the under seat & the inner CVT cover, you will see SYM trademark / logo." and " @mesked 1st of all, show me which AUDI, VW & SKODA looks EXACTLY the same? LOL. Before u post, study the history of Laverda 1st mate! Laverda, in the brink of extinction was acquired by Aprilia. That is when they started rebadging SYM scooters to try and revive their business. Finally and perhaps the most telling of all:
"Maybe the Laverda logos are much more in quality, the rest I can bet they are all the same no matter what other brand it fit in. I own a Modenas Elegan 150cc an all the spare parts are from SYM. Quite reliable on the all aspect especially the mechanical except the plastic cover which is very prone to aging."

Stick to a SYM guys regardless of who in the media/social networks says with what and if's or buts.....i've never broken down on one and as far as i can tell no one else here has.

OK yeah no point hiding the fact that, so i have heard that SYM parts are expensive to replace.Engine service wise it's a 2T/4T and more basic than the up to date jap stuff so , an engine on a SYM is basicly a 30 year old jap layout with electronic ignition.Sometimes its best to seek out an old school mechanic rather than main dealer who have overheads to cover at your expense.
