Does anyone know when the first SYM's were imported into the UK and which models these were?

That's a fair old list. I'd never heard of sym or kymco or any of the Taiwan/China brands until I started looking for scooters. The only names I knew were Italian and Japanese. I must say it was all very confusing to start with. Its not always easy to get proper sensible reviews either. So far I'm happy with my choice. I think that's where forums like ours can be helpful, I know we are all sym owners but think we are a fair bunch who can give a balanced view.

Many thanks for the list. Eventually it would be great if we can put together a list and pictures of all SYM models imported into the UK, a sort of 'SYM Spotters Guide similar to what the Honda Cub boys have produced. Anyway thanks for the list and I will add them to the forthcoming website.
Interesting to read how Jenksy originally never heard of SYM. Likewise, it was Kymco I first came across. The garage I used to get my MZ MOT'd at started dealing in Kymco's and I asked the owner 'Are those made in Taiwan', to which he replied 'They are very well made in Taiwan'. My first encounter with SYM was back in 2008 when I originally started looking for a Joyride. A few of us had tried to form an auto scooter club (South Devon Autons) and one member had a GTS250 and another a Orbit. The GTS owner said it was better than the Piaggio X9 he had just sold. A neighbour then bought a SYM Attila 125 and totally sang its praises. I still hankered after a Joyride 200, and now years later (via a Suzuki Burgman a Piaggio Typhoon and another MZ) I have one and love it.

I have a colleague who has an X9. It looks awful..but it is a 250. . I have been pointed in the direction of the Burgman though.

I had never heard of SYM until I was looking for information on Honda Cubs. When I realised the latter was no longer sold new in the UK by Honda I came across the Symba. That's how I got to hear of SYM.

From experience the Burgman was nice, but very expensive on spares and servicing. I think if I had to go for a larger scooter I would stick with SYM and possibly go for a secondhand GTS or if I could afford one a new Joymax

Interesting to see the Shark 125 still lives on in the shape of the Lexmoto Gladiator. Not sure of the build quality but I think the Gladiator is one of the best selling scooters these days.
On the bike side of things, I am more classic minded and prefer the original Wolf to todays model and the Husky looks and excellent bike.

How much different are the newer scooters for build quality and reliability I wonder? I'm afraid I'm one of these blokes who says "old" where as the more appreciative scooter riders say "classic". Unless of course I'm talking about myself then I'm definitely a classic model!!!!!

Regards build quality,I hit a Volvo 340 head on,probably total velocity of 45/50 mph when he hit me by cutting a corner. I remember him hitting me then as I went up his bonnet I thought this gonna hurt. I remember waking up in an ambulance and paramedic saying I only shattered windscreen by nudging it with my lid. I asked him what condition my scoot was in and he told me my uncle had rode it home for me. Bent forks and that was it.

If I recall it had handguards,2 little headlamps and a sort of enclosed front disc. Was comfy but bouncy and large tyres. I never seen another one since and I had mine 11 years ago

Well that answers that mate I mean Volvos aren't exactly made from recycled baked bean tins! Hope you weren't to badly hurt. Very glad it didn't put you off as well!

The second scooter I owned (my first 125) was an Adly, another Taiwanese make. Great little machine. Took a fair bit of punishment over the year I had it, but apart from needing it's valves adjusted I never had any problems with it. Eventually sold it on to a guy who came through from Glasgow. He'd never been on a scooter before so after we'd signed the forms and he'd paid me the cash he sat on it for a couple of minutes, then got off and came over to ask me how did he get it into first gear ! I wonder if it's still out there somewhere...
